Rwanda’s strong response to Marburg Virus reassures global tourists
Rwanda’s proactive measures in controlling the Marburg virus outbreak have not only contained the virus but also reassured tourists, who continue to visit the country undeterred. The nation’s swift health response has earned praise from both visitors and tourism operators, reaffirming Rwanda as a safe and desirable travel destination, even in the face of a viral outbreak.
Tourism stakeholders have reported an increase in visitor numbers, a clear indication that concerns over the virus have diminished thanks to the government’s robust health protocols. Rwanda’s successful handling of the outbreak is credited with ensuring that international visitors feel secure enough to maintain their travel plans.
Yuki Yamamoto, a tourist from Japan, expressed confidence in Rwanda’s efforts. “I chose to come here after hearing about the safety measures Rwanda has in place. Their reputation for effectively managing public health risks made me feel completely comfortable to visit, including important sites like the Kigali Genocide Memorial,” Yamamoto shared.
Similarly, Gianluca D’Addese from Italy, who explored the country beyond its capital, noted: “The experience here, especially outside Kigali, is remarkable. People are living clean, peaceful lives. I never felt unsafe at any moment. Rwanda stands out as a place in Africa where solo travel is secure and enjoyable.”
Local tourism service providers have echoed these sentiments, affirming that visitor confidence is translating into real business. Judith Uwimana, founder of Judith Safaris, and Dorothy Gashaija, manager of Ndaru Luxury Suites, report a steady influx of guests. "We are welcoming visitors from across the globe, including the U.S., Europe, and various parts of Africa," said Uwimana. "Our bookings continue to rise, even during this period of the Marburg outbreak, thanks to the trust people have in Rwanda’s response."
Nicanor Sabula, who leads an association of airline ticket service providers across 13 African countries, was part of the recently held BIASHARA Africa conference in Rwanda. He praised the country’s management of the situation: “Our business continued uninterrupted. The government’s health protocols have kept everything running smoothly. Rwanda remains a safe destination, and I can personally attest to that.”
Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, has also acknowledged Rwanda’s effective control of the virus. "The progress Rwanda has made is remarkable. Yesterday’s report showed no new infections and no deaths, which leads us to believe the country is nearing complete control over the outbreak," he said in a briefing.
This successful handling of the virus is in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations. The WHO has strongly advised against travel or trade restrictions on Rwanda, highlighting the country’s rigorous containment measures. They emphasize that Rwanda’s decisive actions, including early detection, quarantine, and treatment of infected individuals, have prevented the virus from spreading both within and beyond its borders.
For Rwanda’s tourism sector, the message is clear: the country is open, safe, and ready to welcome visitors. With effective health protocols in place, Rwanda is once again showcasing its resilience and capacity to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for travelers from around the world.
