DRC: Overcrowded boat capsizes in Lake Kivu, rescue efforts underway

On October 3, 2024, a boat named ’MV Merda’ carrying over 100 passengers capsized in Lake Kivu on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) side, near the Mukwidja area in Kalehe Territory, South Kivu Province. The boat had departed from Minova and was en route to the city of Goma when the accident occurred.

Dramatic footage captured the boat slowly sinking until it fully submerged, leaving a few passengers struggling to swim toward the shore in a desperate attempt to survive.

Jean-Jacques Purusi, the Governor of South Kivu, confirmed that the boat was significantly overloaded, carrying more than triple its intended capacity.

"The boat, which was only meant to carry 30 passengers, was carrying over 100 people when it sank in Lake Kivu near Mukwidja," he said.

While the exact number of casualties and survivors remains unknown, Governor Purusi hinted at possible fatalities.

"We do not yet have detailed figures, but reports indicate that there are both survivors and casualties."

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping forces stationed in eastern DRC were quick to respond, offering assistance in the rescue operations for those who had fallen into the lake.

Governor Purusi attributed the tragedy to negligence by those responsible for water transportation safety, including boat operators and the lake security police.

He also announced an emergency security meeting in South Kivu to address the incident and ensure accountability for all involved.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full impact of the disaster.
