Nyanza: District Council removes Mayor Ntazinda Ersme from his office
Following recent internal elections within the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) in Nyanza District where Mayor Ntazinda Ersme was unexpectedly not elected as Chairman, despite it being customary for sitting mayors, the District Council has now officially removed him from office.
In a special session held on April 15, 2025, the district council voted to dismiss Mayor Ntazinda from his position, citing failure to adequately fulfill his leadership responsibilities.
The decision was made public via the district’s official X account (formerly Twitter), stating that the council had resolved to relieve Mayor Ntazinda of his duties due to "inadequate performance in executing his responsibilities."
In addition to his dismissal as mayor, Ntazinda was also stripped of his role as a councilor in the district leadership structure.
Sources close to the matter allege that Ntazinda had exhibited unprofessional conduct in recent months. It is reported that he attempted to appeal to the council for leniency ahead of the vote, but his plea was ultimately rejected.
Mayor Ntazinda was serving his second term in office. His removal raises questions about potential underlying conflicts between him and members of the district council, although no official statement has been issued by Ntazinda himself.
This development adds to the speculation surrounding his recent failure to secure the chairmanship of RPF-Inkotanyi in Nyanza a position traditionally held by sitting district mayors fueling further questions about the circumstances leading to his ousting.
