Malawi: Politician accused of plotting to assassinate President Lazarus Chakwera
Patricia Kaliati, a prominent opposition politician in Malawi, has been arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate President Lazarus Chakwera. Kaliati, the General Secretary of the UTM party, was detained last week on accusations of collaborating with others to execute a serious crime.
During a court appearance on Monday in the capital, Lilongwe, the 57-year-old Kaliati did not speak. However, her lawyer asserted that she maintains her innocence, as reported by various Malawian media outlets. Supporters of the UTM party gathered outside the court, chanting songs against the government, reflecting the political tension surrounding the case.
Prior to the hearing, it was reported that Kaliati is believed to have two co-conspirators who are currently in hiding. The judge ruled that she could be released on bail pending further investigation, provided she pays a specified amount. The state prosecutor had requested an additional week of detention for Kaliati.
The Malawi police have assured that they are adhering to legal procedures and respecting Kaliati’s rights throughout the investigation. The UTM party was part of the governing coalition until June of this year, when it split following the death of its leader, Saulos Chilima, who was also the Vice President of Malawi. Chilima died in a military plane crash in northern Malawi at the age of 51.
Since then, Kaliati has positioned herself as a candidate to replace Chilima in the party leadership, with plans to challenge President Chakwera in the upcoming presidential elections next year. Known for her outspoken nature and direct criticism, Kaliati transitioned into politics after working as a primary school teacher.
The situation underscores the ongoing political strife in Malawi, with allegations against Kaliati perceived by some as politically motivated. Further developments in the case are anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
