Kenya: President Ruto appoints Prof. Kindiki Kithure as his Vice President

On October 18, 2024, Kenyan President Dr. William Samoei Ruto appointed Prof. Kindiki Kithure as the new Vice President, replacing Rigathi Gachagua.

The announcement comes in the wake of Gachagua’s removal by the Senate the previous day.

In a statement released by the Office of the President, it was confirmed that President Ruto communicated this decision to the members of the National Assembly, seeking their approval for Prof. Kindiki to assume the role.

The statement read, “President Dr. William Samoei Ruto has appointed Prof. Kindiki Kithure as Deputy President and has submitted his name to the National Assembly for consideration.”

Prof. Kindiki’s appointment follows the Senate’s vote on October 17, 2024, which resulted in the ousting of Gachagua, who had held the position for two years.

Prior to this appointment, Prof. Kindiki served as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration since 2022.

He has a strong political background, having previously held the position of Senator and served as Deputy Speaker of the Senate until 2020.

Gachagua, 59, was removed from office following serious allegations against him, including corruption, embezzlement of public funds, inciting ethnic divisions, using his position for personal gain, obstructing government operations, and supporting protests that occurred in June, which resulted in the deaths of 50 individuals.

Protesters also set fire to the Parliament building during those demonstrations.

The appointment of Prof. Kindiki is seen as a crucial move by President Ruto as he seeks to stabilize his administration following recent political turmoil. As the new Deputy President, Kindiki is expected to play a pivotal role in restoring public confidence and addressing the challenges facing the government.

The confirmation process in the National Assembly is anticipated to proceed swiftly, with many eyes on how Kindiki will navigate the political landscape and work alongside President Ruto in the coming months.
