As Rwandans observed the 30th National Heroes Day on Thursday, February 1, Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente paid tribute to Rwandan heroes by laying a wreath at the National Heroes Mausoleum in Remera, Kigali.

In the ceremony honouring the deeds of men and women who displayed exceptional patriotism and sacrifice for the country, Ngirente was joined by Senate President Francois

François Xavier Kalinda, Chief Justice Faustin Nteziryayo, and Ambassador of the Republic of Congo Guy Nestor Itoua, who’s the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps.

Also present were Chief of Defence Staff of Rwandan Defence Force, Gen Mubarakh Muganga and the Inspector General of Police Felix Namuhoranye, among other officials.

In a related ceremony also held at the mausoleum, relatives of the National Heroes laid wreaths in honour of their bravery and courage.

The 30th National Heroes Day was held under the theme “Heroism amongst Rwandans, Our Dignity.”

The celebrated heroes of Rwanda are in three categories: Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi.

Imanzi features individuals who achieved remarkable deeds at the expense of their own lives. These are Late Maj Gen Fred Gisa Rwigema, the first commander of the liberation struggle, and the Unknown Soldier, who symbolises those who died during the liberation struggle.

Imena includes notable figures such as King Mutara III Rudahigwa, former Prime Minister Agathe UwiringiyimanaFelicite Niyitegeka, Michel Rwagasana, and the Nyange Students.

Currently, no individuals have been featured in the Ingenzi category.
