Rwanda closes Marburg treatment hospital as outbreak subsides

The Ministry of Health in Rwanda has announced the closure of hospital that was treating Marburg virus patients following a 14-day period with no new cases.

This milestone, highlighted in the Ministry’s Weekly Report released on Friday, November 15, 2024, reflects significant progress in containing the deadly outbreak.

According to the report, the last confirmed Marburg patient was discharged eight days ago, marking the end of active cases in the country. The Ministry stated, "The hospital that was treating Marburg patients has been closed."

All individuals who were in contact with infected patients have completed their monitoring period, though preventive measures remain in place. Additionally, those who recovered from the virus are still under medical observation to ensure their continued health.

Since the outbreak was first reported on September 27, 2024, Rwanda recorded 66 confirmed cases. Among these, 51 patients recovered, while 15 unfortunately lost their lives.

In response to the outbreak, Rwanda intensified its prevention and control measures, including identifying the virus’s source. Investigations revealed that the Marburg virus originated from fruit bats residing in caves, which transmitted the virus to humans.

Efforts to safeguard public health have included the administration of Marburg vaccines and widespread testing. As of November 8, 2024, 1,710 vaccines had been administered, and 7,408 individuals tested.

While the situation has improved, the Ministry of Health has emphasized the need for continued vigilance to prevent future outbreaks. Enhanced public health measures, community awareness, and research on viral origins are key components of Rwanda’s strategy moving forward.

This achievement highlights Rwanda’s resilience and the effectiveness of its healthcare system in managing infectious disease outbreaks.
