MINEMA reports 9 deaths and 119 destroyed houses by disasters in just 15 days
The Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) has reported that, within the first 15 days of April 2025, disasters caused by heavy rainfall have claimed the lives of nine people and left eleven others injured across different parts of Rwanda.
According to MINEMA, the heavy rains have not only resulted in loss of life but have also caused significant damage to property. A total of 119 houses were destroyed, nine of which collapsed completely. Additionally, about 86.2 hectares of land were washed away, six livestock—including cows—died, 15 school buildings were damaged, and four roads were rendered impassable. Power infrastructure was also affected, with four electricity lines damaged, along with one administrative office and three bridges.
As the rains continue to fall across the country, authorities in the City of Kigali have announced plans to relocate residents living in high-risk zones.
Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, the city’s Communications Officer, said that efforts are underway to protect the lives of people who are most vulnerable to these extreme weather events. This decision follows a warning from Meteo Rwanda forecasting increased rainfall in the coming days.
She stated: “Meteo Rwanda has confirmed that heavy rain is expected to continue in the coming days. For us, the top priority is relocating people who live in dangerous areas to ensure their safety.”
The most affected sectors in Kigali include Kimisagara, Kigali, and Gitega, all located in Nyarugenge District.
The Rwanda Meteorology Agency has warned of further consequences from the ongoing rain, including flooding in wetlands and valleys, landslides, soil erosion, and collapsing slopes in areas where erosion control measures have not been implemented.
They also cautioned about risks from lightning strikes and urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize the impact of these disasters.
