Experts Say Focusing on Small Livestock Farming Is Key to Lowering Meat Prices

As the price of beef continues to rise in markets across Rwanda, livestock and nutrition experts argue that the long-term solution does not lie solely in increasing the number of beef cattle, but rather in promoting the farming of small livestock such as chickens, pigs, goats, rabbits, and fish. These animals are said to have the potential to increase meat production quickly and reduce prices.

Dr. Solange Uwituze, Deputy Director General in charge of Animal Resources Development at RAB, explained that while there are ongoing initiatives to rear cattle specifically for beef, the cost of raising them remains high compared to the cost of keeping small livestock.

She emphasizes that the most effective way to reduce meat prices is to increase investment in small livestock farming, as they require less space, are more affordable, and can benefit more people.

This view is echoed by local residents who struggle to afford beef regularly. Yvette Niyonzima from Huye District said that since she started rearing just five chickens, she has been able to enjoy meat every Sunday without buying expensive beef. She believes that Rwandans need to change their mindset and start supporting small livestock as a sustainable way to access affordable nutrition.

Through its five-year development plan (2025–2029), the Government of Rwanda aims to increase meat production by 20%, from 217,556 tons to 247,223 tons. The plan includes a strong emphasis on boosting the production of meat from small livestock, such as poultry, pigs, goats, and fish, which have been identified as cost-effective and vital for combating malnutrition.

Researchers in livestock development highlight several advantages of small livestock: they reproduce quickly, grow faster, are easier to manage, and can be raised in small spaces. Vedaste Ndagijimana, a rural development expert, notes that when a household owns animals like chickens or pigs, it gains access to essential nutrients and a reliable source of income for needs such as school fees or health insurance.

Although many believe that beef is the most nutritious meat, nutritionists affirm that small livestock also provide high-quality nutrients and are more affordable. Citizens are encouraged to adopt a new perspective and appreciate all types of meat as beneficial, which would help ease the pressure on beef demand a product that is expensive and slow to produce.

Relying solely on cattle farming is not a sufficient strategy to reduce meat prices. The real solution lies in shifting public mindset and investing in small livestock, which offer a cheaper, more abundant source of meat for the broader population. This approach could make meat more accessible and affordable for all.
